silly season.

It's that time of the year again. Christmas usually makes people all warm and fuzzy on the inside, but when you work in retail (with the added extended trading hours), the shine starts to wear off. To be honest, I'm not really sure what to ask for Christmas because everything on the list I intend to acquire myself with my hard earned cashola. I had warnings from the BFF and boy not buy anything over the holiday season incase they ended up giving me something I had already purchased. I pride myself more on giving gifts. My rule of thumb: Buy someone you'd like to receive yourself. Deb scored herself a Petite Grand initial necklace (I bought one for myself too), Jack's getting some a little fancy (think Mr Porter - who also have incredible packaging) and mumma's getting a new iPad with Retina Display. Luckily all my shopping was done online and way before the delivery cut-off date so I won't be in a last minute shopping frenzy but spare a thought for all the poor retail assistants slugging it out over the weekend and Christmas Eve!

summer wardrobe planning.

Welcome spring! Gone are the days (well maybe not quite yet) where I have to wear the same black coat day in day out and stack on the layers to keep me warm during my early morning and late night commute. Hello longer daylight, banana smoothie weather and (in my opinion) easier outfit decisions. Wasting no time on this seasonal change, I'm already gearing up for some new purchases. First on the list: the panama hat.

wishing and hoping.

The big two-one is slowly creeping up on me but I'm no where near as hyped as I thought I would be. I missed out on having a huge 18th birthday bash and I anticipated saving a celebration for my 21st but after months of sifting through venues, enquiring about minimum spends and contemplating guest lists I ended up opting for the low key dinner with some of my closest work mates. Not exactly what I would have envisaged but hey, let's just save the big one for the wedding*. I'm more excited about having a weekend. Jack booked us a stay at the Shangri-la which means a whole two days of rest and relaxation. 

Here's my obligatory birthday wish list in collage form. I was spoilt rotten by the boy who bought me a MacBook Air (cross that one off the list) and gave it to me a week early (blogging as we speak on my new baby), I've secured a Jordan Askill ring as my 'self' birthday present and I've chosen to spend my parents' birthday money on a PS1 wallet. I can't even comprehend becoming 21 - I still think I'm a teenager. Already fear I'm getting older and still haven't achieved anything significant in life.

*Not happening anytime soon obviously.

When I was younger I used to love Christmas. The whole thing was just magical. Then I slowly learnt that Santa Claus wasn't real, that my mum would get up at 3 in the morning, eat the cookies and drink the milk I left out for Santa under the tree. And then I worked in retail. And now Christmas isn't so special anymore. But there is still hope. Growing up I relied on American television to provide me with an accurate portrayal of reality. So my hopes and dreams for a perfect New York Christmas with snow, hot chocolate, ice skating, Christmas parades and department store shopping are still alive and well. 

Christmas isn't a big occasion for my family. In fact my mum and I are too lazy to look for the tree in the basement that we decided not to put one up this year. We do get together with family friends on Christmas day for lunch, but there aren't really those ongoing traditions and family bonding - not to mention my parents aren't the type to spend mass amounts of money on materialistic goods.  I usually get socks, underwear and pyjamas from my parents.  My favourite part about Christmas is buying gifts. I love seeing the look on my loved ones' faces when they open up my neatly wrapped present (I love gift wrapping especially with a bow) and know it's something sentimental that they're just going to love. I think I've nailed my boyfriend's gift/s- it's going to be epic! And of course the giving season wouldn't be complete without donating to a charity. It's something I started doing with my mum when I was in high school and it's something I've continued to do over the years. 

I'm definitely hoping to get my new Olympus camera early next year (with a little  bit of help from my parents and boyfriend) before I go away but also so I can take better photos for the blog. The other things I'll accumulate myself once I earn back my Christmas spendings. So I don't expect Santa to drop a Miu Miu wallet off at the Ong residence, but hey, maybe there's another generous Santa out there... kidding!

S U M M E R S U R V I V A L

Probably not an outfit that looks very 'together' (but you never know it might surprise you), but more of a collection of things that I need for my summer wardrobe. I've finally let go of the knit (it was hard to say goodbye to the Acne Ruth Twisted Knit, hopefully there will be something equally as lovely come Japan) and ready to embrace t-shirt and shorts weather with open arms (get it? cause singlets don't have sleeves?).

To ensure summer survival, I believe the following items are needed: (1) The staple button up shirt, in any colour which will aid you eventually with the (sad) transition to fall and winter. Wear buttoned up and tucked into shorts or as a loose jacket type thing. (2) The white short. So Isabel Marant brought us the pale pink short but I'm all for the white short, just so I can wear white all over. (3) A small shoulder bag. There's no need to carry huge tote full of bits and bobs while you're shopping/ out with friends. (4) A statement cuff. If you're like me and your summer wardrobe consists of shorts and plain white t's, then you can afford to go big with your jewellery. And finally (5) A good pair of wedges, because thongs are just downright plain and boring.

W I N T E R B L U E S



Marc Jacobs Hillier Hobo, Acne knit, Acne Pistol Boots

Stuck in front of a computer display with writers block, I decided to re evaluate my current wish list which went a little something like this. I'm still stuck in winter mode even though designers and publications are looking towards the warmer months. See I'm heading to Japan for two weeks in February and it's going to be freezing so I want to be prepared a) for the weather and b) for the photos. Call me superficial, but I do not want to be stuck in a daggy winter coat, have photos taken of me wearing these said daggy clothes and then posted up on Facebook and immortalised in an iPhoto photobook. I would like to travel in style! It's partly because I want to post some personal style pics up here and you can never avoid photos on holiday, but I'm just too lazy to take them on a regular basis.

I have really bad self control. I tell myself I should buy all these winter woolies now so I'll be prepared for the cold. But the logical (and fun) way would be just to save up all my money and then spend it overseas. But what happens if I don't find anything I like? Complete lie I know. And as for the Hillier, the shape makes it the perfect hang on the crook of your elbow bag. Plus seeing a couple of fashion magazine girls has made me want it even more. Possible birthday present to self?

I'll leave you with some ear candy. I'm obsessed with this song (although this style of music isn't really my thing) this is just a whole lot of fun - especially to rap to and dance around in your room in, trust me.

F R I E N D O F M I N E

My current obsession and 'must buy' are these 50's skater inspired Friend of Mine dresses that first caught my eye in the May edition of SHOP. I was instantly drawn to the simplicity and yet girly-ness of the dress (i'm a sucker for pleated skirts) that can be worn all year round - with or without stockings, boots or sandals and perfect for layering with leather jackets/ khaki parkas. And i'm loving the 'rust'/ pop/ block colour trend especially during winter (where everything is dull neutrals and dark tones) and yet still great for summer. It's a super versatile, transseasonal dress that could be worn over and over in so many ways.

What's even better is that Friend of Mind presents us with an offering of three different styles - long sleeve, short sleeve and singlet as well as four different colours (black, cream, rust, taupe). It's a blessing and a curse because now I can't decide which style and colour to buy.


The only inconvenient thing about this dress is that Friend of Mine is rarely stocked in boutiques (so I can't try it on) but it's available widely online only. I was initially concerned about the way this dress would look at me (as compared to a skinny gangly model). But my qualms with the dress were put to rest as I saw a girl (of similar height and build) at my internship office wearing the cream Harley dress. Problem solved!

Anyone who knows me knows I'm really indecisive and a calculated shopper (despite the fact I may come across as impulsive and uncontrollable) so I have to weigh up the pros/ cons when I want to invest in something (yes, I firmly believe expensive pieces should be an investment): Will i be able to wear it all year around? Will I be able to incorporate it into the rest of my wardrobe?

My current hang-ups are:
  • Colour? Do I go simple like cream or black so I can wear it with  anything and everything? Or do I go rust because it's different (although the colour may go off trend within the next year?)
  • Style? Obviously the Winona (singlet)/ Oscar (tee shirt) style gives me the flexibility to be able to wear it on its own or layered with a jacket. Is the Harley dress too typically winter? Also whether I'm after a tight or oversized fit (the singlet style skater dress is baggy under the arms)
