They don't call it magic hour for nothing. Though sundown comes and goes within a matter of minutes,  if you get your timing right (along with two incred photographers who know their way around a camera) you get some pretty flattering lighting (reflections of the sky the lens of sunglasses was necessary) and I must say it gives my skin a healthy glow. 

Yes I am carrying a boombox in the second photo a-la John Cusack in Say Anything. Those things are actually quite heavy. Not sure how you can hold that thing up in the air for long periods of time. Props to you young Cusack. After shooting something typically girly, pink hues and all, I opted for a tougher look calling upon my ever faithful denim + leather combo but with a slight retro slash thug slash boyish charm. To tell you the truth this is probably what I feel most comfortable in. Relaxed leather shorts and an oversized vest with an equally oversized tee featuring an appearance from my favourite mouses that go by the name of Mickey and Minnie. And one again for the umteenth time, headwear. I will probably march right back to Sportsgirl tomorrow to buy myself another one of these slouch beanies. Take my word for it.

Finally made it to the beach... about two months too late. The day before that scorching 43 degree heatwave in Sydney, Jack I went to catch some rays at our favourite coastal hang Freshwater. Is it depressing that I only ever make it out to the beach twice a year? The heat made the surf the perfect temperature and there were long intervals between waves so there were times when we could just float in the ocean. Now armed with two Zimmermann bikinis (and one A.T.G on the way) and a work-in-progress beach bod I just might be ready for Bali which is slowly creeping up on me. I always go through this strange pre-holiday regret phase where the excitement subsides and I secretly wish I'd never planned a holiday because I hate the feeling of come back home to normalcy and routine. Anyone else get that?

This Zimmermann playsuit (hiding behind the equally amazing Ksubi vest) was one of the more impulse buys from spring. Having worn this to my best friend's 21st, intern days, a New Year's Day barbecue and now the beach, I am starting to realise the playsuit's full potential. Expect a post from Bali about my many ways to dress up (and down) this piece and why it's made my wardrobe staples list.

paradise punch.

Now this is a hawaiian shirt. Plans change last minute and I found myself attending a 90's themed party with no costume. Is it sad that even though I grew up in the decade, followed every bad fashion trend possible (Jelly bracelets, skirts over pants, plastic tattoo chokers), and lived for pop culture - that I couldn't even remember what was quintessential 90's fashion. Enter this incredible vintage hawaiian shirt from Cream on Crown with everyone's favourite summer fruits plastered over the front and back. I didn't even care that it wasn't exactly 90's (Or is it?), it's just that damn cool. Tie a jumper around my waist and you have some semblance of Melrose Place/ 90210 teen fershunz. 

I wore this ensemble to Homebake on Saturday with April, a celebration of home grown music and comedy (loved seeing San Cisco and Ball Park Music) and though it would be somewhat appropriate given our history with hawaiian shirts ie. Mambo/ surfie culture (Do people in Hawaii even wear hawaiian shirts? I am full of questions today) to put a girly spin on the festival look teamed with my favourite denim shorts (I know they are on the verge of denim underpants but I love them so. Should probably stop throwing them into the washing machine though - they fray and therefore seem to get shorter by the week). 

And after months of sitting, waiting, wishing, I finally found the perfect cross body shoulder bag which was a steal from the Benah sample sale. I am also the proud owner of a black leather belt (yes it took me this long). Must stop buying things for myself and start buying Christmas presents for everyone else. Tis the season for giving after all.

sk8er boi.

Don't tell me Avril Lavigne wasn't everything you wish you could be when you were 12. She inspired me to pick up the black eyeliner for my lower lid (and I haven't put it down ever since), studded belts, skull jewellery, sideways caps, jelly bracelets, sweat bands. And ties with tee shirts (which eventually progressed to ties printed on tees)? Ingenious. Kidding! I've certainly come a long way from those dark days. My mother always told me she was a bad influence (I was denied the pleasure of going to her concert which resulted in me ignoring mum for about a week), but I don't think I came out of that part of my life losing. Or is there something you guys aren't telling me?

This is my 2012 take on the skate look (sans the actual skating part). My obsession with headwear continues to be fuelled with this sick 5 panel from the NZ brand, I Love Ugly (yes if you're wondering, I deliberately chose not to go with the now mainstream Supreme/ Obey ones). Brand snob. I adore the fact that my new oversized Ksubi vest has the power to turn a ruffled drop waist dress into something a little more laid back (am I one of the boys yet?). And I told you I'd be jumping around from style to style: first beach-y then retro and now skate. Last week it was Lana, this week it's Avril. I wonder which musical influence I will channel next?

PS. Can I just point out how difficult it is to shoot at a skate park? Every time I drive past one there are always hooligans people there! Lucky we snuck a few shots in before the school bell rang.

I've never been much of a beach person. Not to say I don't like beaches, but I only go once or twice a year usually on a public holiday when it's absolutely crowded and unbearably hot. While I took a Saturday off work to 'study' (and I use the term loosely), I thought I'd sneak in a quick morning road trip to the Northern Beaches to meet with Aprilia and play blogger dress ups by the sand. And although our time together was short lived, the two of us wondered what it would be like to be a full time blogger. Just prancing around in fancy get ups, taking plenty of photos and posting daily. What a life.

My panama hat made its official debut today and I have no doubt it will be glued to my head come consistent hot weather. I really do love my head wear. And so should you. It's fancy and it keeps you protected from the sun. Double whammy.

Tomorrow marks Week 13 of semester. The last week. Also known as the week from hell. One group assignment, one exam, one speaking exam and one feature article due. If you don't hear from me assume I have become a zombie. No sleep and no blogging make Melissa something something. Go crazy? Don't mind if I do!

flowers in my hair.

If you stalk follow me via any other social media outlets, you'll know that I have developed an attachment to this Limedrop headband in the short span of time I have come into possession of it. Not sure I can bear to part with it. Although loaned for my shoot on Saturday, I could easily say I wore it more than the model herself (which has lead to Jack dubbing it my 'stylist headband') - I even wore it to Woolworths earning myself a full on dirty from an old lady walking past. What? A girl can't wear flowers on her head now?

While you can't go wrong with a white dress and floral headband (channeling some serious Lana Del Ray circa Born to Die sans the tigers at her feet), I love the hard/ soft, masculine/ feminine contrast between the Baddies singlet + leather jacket and the white flowers. Just gives it a totally different (or mixed) vibe for those days when you can't quite figure out who you want to be. And on a completely unrelated note I have a theory that wearing flowers in your hair to work quells angry customers.

if i were a boy.

Since you all responded so well to my casual beanie outfit the other week, I thought I'd share with you another one of my every day ensembles. This is what I wore on my first day back at uni yesterday, once again comfort being key. Probably more so because I ended up walking from Glebe to Alexandria and back (about 5km in total) in the morning and up and down Crown St in the afternoon. I'd say putting on my Converse as I walked out the door was the best decision I made (besides skipping the first lecture of semester. Clearly I'm off to a great start). 

These Ksubi coated La Femmes are practically my second skin. Being cropped, they're the perfect length for my short stature and they haven't stretched one bit. It's funny, I wear these about 90% of the time (in fact I'm wearing them right now) and yet in the year I've had them, they've never been featured on the blog. I've always thought that the most simplest of outfits (like the one above) aren't really blog-worthy but I suppose people would rather see what I really wear rather than what I wish I could wear if my feet could withstand a day in heels. Like Alexander Wang said "Anyone can get dressed up and glamourous, but it is how people dress in their days off that are most intriguing." Can't say I'm very intriguing (I'm probably quite predictable), but at least I'm keeping it real?

Last Saturday I celebrated my first day off from work in what feels like forever. I had my blogger bud Aprilia tag along for a day of intensive shopping, eating and talking.  We hit Kirribilli markets in the morning although we weren't very successful with our purchases. Tightly packed racks and overflowing baskets of clothing are a little overwhelming for someone who knows exactly what they're looking for when they go shopping. So we walked around and found this beautiful spot right along the harbour, overlooking the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House (feeling just a little touristy in our own city).

On any given day if you bump into me at uni or at work, you'll usually find me wearing the classic tee shirt and jeans/ shorts combination. It's easy, comfortable and requires minimal effort. So despite me making out like I'm some avid fashionista in reality this shoot is more true to my everyday style - when I meant I like minimalist, I really meant it. Pieces like this jacket from new Aussie label Hunt No More, are perfect to inject a bit of colour/ interest to an otherwise simple outfit. I'm trying to warm up to a small dose of colour in my wardrobe, but if you ever offered me anything in black or a colour, I'd easily gravitate towards the black. Old habits die hard.

L A F E M M E

After many a visit to the Ksubi store, phone calls back and forth, patiently waiting for Harper's to return them from a shoot and a battle between some guy named 'Kevin' who wanted the same pair, I finally landed myself my first pair of Ksubi jeans! And let me tell you they are ah-mazing. These are the Elle Aye La Femme's - they have a black wax type finish to them and they're cropped so they're perfect on vertically challenged people like myself because they're just the right length! And they're super skinny and so flattering. Just a little something different than your average black skinnies. There aren't many around either (that's why I had to fight for one of the last 24's I could find in stores - although My Catwalk has a few). Worth every last cent of my pay. I've been wearing them three days in a row. Love!

K O L O R S



Trust me to be up at 3am and suddenly remember the kolors video premieres and the new range hits stores today. 

A eerie, mystical, Bill Viola inspired video set to opera creates this kind of otherworldly, chilling atmosphere that had me hypnotised. Although it was nothing more than three skinny models (you get a lot of close ups of their hips and torsos) including 'it' girl Bambi, there was something about it that made me keep want to watch from start to finish. 

Whatever the video was going to look like, everyone knew it would be huge success from the get go. I was just a little disappointed they didn't showcase all the colours. I'm desperate to have a look but there's nothing up yet on the ksubi website.

Coloured jeans have made a comeback and are well and truly here to stay. General Pants better had better stock up.  I'm counting on them.
