interview. vera xane.

"When I left school I thought fashion was where I wanted to be," admits Alex Smyth-Kirk, designer of upcoming accessories label Vera Xane. Though career pathways can often be make-or-break decisions, Alex is testament that you don't necessarily have to get it right the first time. "Three years into my degree I realised I didn't want to be a fashion designer." So she left and crossed over to an Arts degree whilst dreaming up her new project that has now been two years in making. About to debut her first collection Dichotomies which takes its inspiration from her long time infatuation with 60's/ 70's rock & roll era, her love of travel and her appreciation of architecture and construction, her designs have already been granted a tick of approval from InStyle, Vogue China and Shop Til You Drop. Late last year I had the chance to chat with the inspiring Alex. Read on to find out more!

On growing up in a rock & roll background:

I was brought up around that [rock & roll] music my whole life. There’s memorabilia all over my parents house. When I go to trivia it’s my job to answer all the questions about music. There’s ridiculous things from the 60’s that I just happen to know. My dad had this magazine called Drift that he started when he was 23 while studying at UNSW - which is where I just finished my degree. It started as a university based newspaper but it eventually became national. He's met members of the Rolling Stones and all kinds of interesting people in the industry. When we were first designing elements of the brand, I pulled out all these archive copies for inspiration.

On drawing from architecture:

In the last five years, I’ve travelled a lot since finishing school and I constantly find myself drawn to cage shapes. Sometimes it’s really literal. Like I have an obsession with those electrical towers. I was in Dubai in July and there was thousands of them one after another - I think it’ll come out more in future seasons. Even [Antoni] Gaudi and that non-literal approach to design really influence my aesthetic.

On some of her favourite places to travel:

I absolutely adore Morocco. Everyone goes to Marrakech - though I love Marrakech because it has quite a rock & roll background (the Beatles and the Rolling Stones used to go there all the time) - Fez is still one of my favourite places. We stayed inside the Casbah and it’s this crazy ancient town where you start walking down little alley ways and they get smaller and smaller until you get to a tiny door. It’s like something out of Alice in Wonderland.

These days I’m in Bali all the time [Alex then proceeds to give me suggestions on her Bali hotspots]. If you do Bali the right way it’s so much fun. You can have twice as much fun as you have in Sydney, for way less money.

On the Vera Xane woman:

When I’m designing I definitely have a girl in mind. She is the kind of girl who would dress in Ellery but loves vintage, someone who doesn’t just follow fashion for the sake of it. She’s not a literal fashion girl but is more aware of it. She has a love and appreciation for design. But at the same time she’s edgy, young and smart. Women like Leigh Lezark and Georgia May Jagger are some of my modern muses. I have always had an obsession with the Jagger girls and Ronnie Wood’s daughters. I love the daughters of rock & roll. They're like this cool modern version of everything their parents stood for.

On accessorising:

I love arm parties but not in the Man Repeller sense. I love mixing high and low. I have no dramas with getting Topshop rings and pairing them with Bvlgari. Vintage and unique travel finds are also a must - there’s nothing more beautiful than having something that no one else can get. I tried to make my collection look like something that not everyone else would have. It’s a mixed metal collection - that’s how I tried to introduced ‘colour’ into my wardrobe.

Dichotomies will be available online next month.

SW design studio.

"It's like Lego for adults!" - Sophia Phan from Moulin Frock

The SW team have been busy bees preparing for the launch of yet another new initiative (and there's more exciting times ahead in the next few months), letting you run free reign and take full creative control over the design process. This afternoon I was invited back to SWHQ to test run the soon to be launched Design Studio (which has been in the works since my interning days), an online creative space which allows you to customise signature Bohemian Bardot jewellery, from the burnished plating to the luxe summer palette stones, turning something that was originally very Samantha into a piece that is uniquely you.

Myself and a handful of other bloggers had a blast taking a trip down memory lane to our primary school art and craft days, getting a little glue stuck on our hands, having a minor crisis over what stone combinations to us ('Is this too ice cream-y? Or too matchy-matchy?). Going live in two weeks, this online component is sure to take off and makes the perfect personalised gift for a friend (but you're more than welcome to treat yourself), so get your creative juices flowing and be your own Samantha Wills.

sw hunter + gatherer.

On Wednesday I had the pleasure of stopping by Claire's Kitchen at le Salon to preview the Samantha Wills Winter 13 collection. It was a rather significant event to me in a few ways: it marked the first showing where I wasn't interning for the team. I haven't actually seen any of this collection so it was all totally new to me and of course was nothing short of amazing. Secondly, it was this time last year that I worked my first SW media event and met some lovely blogger babes that I'm still in touch with today. It was nice to see things from the other side, have no expectation of the collection or the setting and be completely taken aback by the whole experience (even better because Samantha was there in the flesh!). Yes an SW showing is very much an experience, from the venue, to the merchandising, to the food and of course the jewellery. Careful attention is paid to every little detail.

Two collections were launched at the event, Hunter + Gatherer (Winter 13) and SW Fine. Being very minimalistic with my jewellery I was instantly drawn to the dainty delicate bracelets, anklets and necklaces. I had seen this collection in the works during my time at SW so it was quite a satisfying feeling to see it finally come together. This one will be available just in time for the gifting season so it's perfect for all your gal pals (the BFF and I already have matching SW anchor bracelets). The other was Winter 13, centered around the SW muse in Paris, collecting trinkets and ornaments from vintage markets and weekend escapes documenting her free spirited optimism through life's adventures.

I thought I'd try something a little different this time and present the collection to you through video (which worked out well because my photos in the low light failed). I loved putting it together so let me know if you'd like to see more of it in the future!

wanderlustin'

This wouldn't be the first time I've seen this collection. In fact it's almost old news to me, but certainly not to you. So of course I have to share the love! I first laid eyes on The Wanderlust earlier this year at our media showing held at Mr Cook, a florist in Potts Point. I've been working with this collection ever since, in fact I could probably tell you the names and colourways  of all the pieces.

I've been interning at Samantha Wills for just over a year now and after being exposed to two summer, one bridal and two winter collections, I can safely say that The Wanderlust is by far my favourite to date (and my favourite campaign to date too, featuring fresh-faced Saga Rickman).  Inspired by the desire to travel and experience everything the world has to offer, the collection features an injection of peaches, turquoise and yellows amongst burnished golds, silvers and gunmetals. Parts of the collection have a really 1920's art deco feel (I think Chrysler building when I see the Liberty necklace in the last image), the other half embodies the essence of summer with its bright colour palette and layer-able (and by that I mean able to be layered easily) style.

I love seeing the way Samantha's designs and the SW empire have grown since I started. The way she's incorporated the signature Bohemian Bardot teardrop into many of the pieces in this collection is like no other, seeing how certain elements have evolved throughout the seasons (the gold chain mail-esque necklace in the forth picture was initially part of a statement layered necklace last summer, but the girls in the office loved wearing that one specific part so much so it was made into a solo piece) and of course the incredible styling and merchandising. I was so impressed seeing Samantha hard at work at our first media showing as she brought the collection to life with vases, jars, candles, books, trinkets and blooms. Let me tell you, we've come a long way since the black felt stylist trays!

I swear I'm not biased.... okay maybe just a little, but trust me, you're bound love this collection as much as I do! The collection drops in just a matter of days, July 1 to be exact, so get your wish lists ready (my personal picks are the statement necklaces and the bracelet sets) - I've had mine prepared for months!

molten love.

The other day I was sent a package from the lovely Jessy at Molten Store with these little gems inside. I was lucky enough to have won Modern Legacy's giveaway and been given this incredible orange beaded clutch and I thought while I was at it I may as well purchase the subtly elegant Mister Ray choker that I've had my eye on for months.

I've compiled for you my favourite items from the store. I would encourage you to check out Molten Store if you haven't already - I love browsing through their carefully curated online selection of otherworldly treasures. They make the effort to select pieces you might not normally consider when you think statement jewellery - not the kind of statement that jumps out at you. Their jewellery has a more organic aesthetic that is both delicate and understated. Whenever I'm feeling a little uninspired by the conventional costume jewellery that's out there, I turn to Molten Store. Probably their most unique offerings are their one of a kind clutches complete with their clashing prints, injection of neon, fringing, beading and pom poms (I think everyone could use a Confetti Days clutch in their life. It just spells f-u-n).  Their stationery and curious gifts are the perfect affordable solution for a last minute birthday present or special occasion or if you feel like treating yourself to a little something something. Hop to it kids!

fourth crusade.

Ever had a friend who went holidaying in Europe and returned with incredible one off jewellery that you eyed for weeks after? Well never fear, Melbourne based Diana Taranto has got you covered. After spending a year in Rome meandering cobblestone streets, Diana stumbled upon design studios with amazing, handmade jewellery and decided to bring these pieces back to Australia. She found that these hidden gems were simply not available anywhere in Australia and in most cases, anywhere in the world and knew there was a market for this style of jewellery on our shores.

And that’s how she started Fourth Crusade in 2010, an online boutique that offers handmade, unique, avant garde jewellery. The name came from the idea that these pieces were being brought from Italy to Taranto’s home land, Australia (also a reference to the holy wars for you history buffs). I had the opportunity to chat with the lovely Diana about all things accessories...

What do you love most about Italy?
I love (almost) everything about Italy. My grandparents migrated to Melbourne from the Aeolian Islands and Ragusa in the 50's. The first aim was to go back there and seek out the original houses where they all lived and from then on, I was in love with the country. The people, the love of life, the intensity and the food. I have travelled there a number of times and think about my next trip everyday. I am always on the lookout for new pieces while there and have a number of talented friends there with their eyes out for me as well when I am back in Melbourne.

What are your top three picks from Fourth Crusade and how would you style them?

1. Long Gold Zipper Necklace. Hand made by Paola Volpi. It's a statement piece that people literally stop me in the street when I am wearing it to ask where they can buy one as well. Surprisingly, it gets a lot of comments from men as well?! I love wearing gold with green, coral or cobalt blue. This necklace really dresses up a very casual outfit as well.

2. Leone Yellow Bronze Ring. Hand Made by Ashanti Raffaele Cinzio. An all-round winner. I love this ring as it's easy to wear, solid and an organic shaped, statement ring that again, can be worn everyday and goes with everything. The natural features of the handmade qualities really show and each of Ashanti Raffaele Cinzio's rings are signed on the inside of the band.

3. Farfalle Necklace. Designed by me! This is a brand new piece to the Fourth Crusade collection and is a little fun. Italian's love nothing more that spending time with friends around the dinner table and this Farfalle necklace has stunning detail with a small plate featuring the Italian quote "Amicizie é maccheroni, sono meglio caldi" in English, meaning "Friends and maccheroni are both best warm". I wear this a lot. The brushed silver is easy to wear and when people realise it's pasta and ask what the engraved plate says, it always get a conversation started. Good for foodies, chefs and restaurant staff too!

My most prized accessory is…
A silver ring I bought in Greece years ago that had gold leafing set in a clear resin and sterling silver band. It gets comments all the time and inspired me to start importing really unique pieces to Australia. I am still trying to search for the original artist so I can bring them into Fourth Crusade!

My number one style tip when it comes to accessorising is...
One statement necklace, one statement bracelet or ring and keep the rest minimal. If you want to wear big earrings, lose the necklace. No one wants to look like a walking Christmas tree.

The one summer trend I can't wait to try...
Wearing my gold zipper necklace over a casual tee and coloured denim shorts!

Gold zipper necklace from Fourth Crusade
...with T by Alexander Wang tee, J Brand shorts, Karen Walker sunglasses, Proenza Schouler pochette, 3.1 Phillip Lim sandals.

What are you currently working on with Fourth Crusade?
We've just launched our ASOS store which is a huge privilege to have been selected for the ASOS Marketplace. In addition to that, the Silver collection I have recently launched that I designed myself hit the site two weeks ago and given the success of it, am going to launch a new shaped pasta with another Italian pasta saying. You're the first one to know this! (It’s out now here)

What can we expect from Fourth Crusade in the future?
More designs, different materials from wood, rubber, sterling silver and bronze and a great range of price points. Lots of beautiful pieces suitable for casual wear to special one-off pieces for special occasions and unique gifts.

If you're in need of something special this Christmas for your mother, sister, best friend or even to spoil yourself, be sure to check out the beautiful pieces over at Fourth Crusade. You won't be disappointed!

molten relic.

"A collection of curiosities inspired by the bohemian, the sentimental, and the obscure."

These images are courtesy of Molten Store. An Australian online store for intricate treasures and indulgent curiosities - delicate jewellery, leather goods, totes and notebooks. At present the store stocks some of my favourite labels - Low Luv by Erin Wasson, House of Harlow and Estelle Deve. But they haven't stopped there.  A mere four months since the store's inception, the team are ready to launch their new in house label. Molten Relic features an array of rare necklaces, rings, clutches and beach totes with a focus on sun, sand and surf. The collection is heavily based around a style that resembles that of flea markets on a tropical island or beach escape. I used to think to be a statement pieces had to be heavy and large in size with plenty of jewels, chains, layers etc. But what Molten Relic boasts is a collection of statement pieces that spell statement in a different way, capturing that nonchalant bohemian flair.

I love that these images are so pure and yet so raw - very much the same as the look of collection which is described as both gritty and opulent. The decision to keep the images black and white was definitely a deliberate and smart one (though I wonder whether it was partly due to hold suspense). But if these pieces are meant to mimic market finds, they must feature an injection of colour. I'm just siting here thinking up all the possible colour combinations of the beaded clutch, pom pom bag or statement neckpiece (can you just imagine that over a plain white tee?). Well we won't have to wait. The collection launches today. And I guarantee these will look even better in colour.

Head to Molten Store and take a look for yourselves.

dallasandcarlos.

I would be lying if I told you Tato & Memi were the only label I fell in love with that night at the showings a few weeks ago. Pictured is Ashleigh from Tailormaid sporting some serious bling from DALLASANDCARLOS (as was chief maid Sally). I was so in love by the following day I had emailed Sally for all the details and within a week I had nabbed an alphabet letter necklace

DALLASANDCARLOS are an Australian label fronted by Katherine Etheridge and Jesssica Constance. Known best for their signature alphabet necklace (which now also comes in rings and bracelets), the girls' latest collection, S/S 2012 DEATH VALLEY, is a unique take on costume jewellery. The collection is a cross between fine jewellery and DIY elements with hand-died Brazillian stone skull and rat pendants on delicate chains, Italian nappa leather cuffs and cotton plaited bracelets. The skulls and rats give it a 'Day of the Dead' feel, but in wearable jewellery form. Sounds cool? The inspiration comes from the design duo's journey from northern Brazil to sunny southern California which you get immediately after seeing the Americana vibe of their campaign.

I was lucky enough to have a quick q&a session with the designers, Katherine and Jessica...

How did DALLASANDCARLOS come about?
We (Jessica and Katherine) are old friends from school. We met up a few years ago when we were both living in Brazil. We found some amazing materials that inspired us to start creating samples for our first collection.

Where did the name come from?
When we first started the label, we were both living in apartments in an island in the South of Brazil called Florianopolis. Katherine was living in an apartment named “dallas” and Jessica was in an apartment called “carlos”. Each day we would call each other & say “whats’s up in dallas?” and “what’s up in carlos?”- that’s how the name came about.
What has been the highlight of your design careers so far?
Being able to travel to the places we’ve been and experience what we have while always being on the job.

What is your favourite piece from S/S collection and what do you love to style it with?
Jessica: django rat ring in silver & pedro skull wish bracelet in black & gold. I love layering them with everything depending on the outfit.
Katherine: django skull ring, django bracelet, & hugo rat necklacelayering lots of them together with basics and jeans or wearing a more statement piece on its own at night.
What’s your top accessorising tip?
Don’t be afraid to wear gold & silver together, layering, wearing all bracelets on one hand and flashes of colour.

What’s in store for Dallas and Carlos in the future?
... Russia, Bulgaria,  Bolivia & beyond.... Stay tuned... xx

Word is in the accessory world it's all about the wrist - bracelet, bangle, cuff and watch stacking. This is certainly one of the easier and more translatable trends to pull off, as I'm sure everyone has some beaded or friendship bracelets lying around. Mix your colourful friendship bracelets with zen beads, knotted leather, gold chunky chains and silver studded cuffs. Even doubling up on watches is becoming the new 'cool' - why you need two watches on the same hand is beyond me but it seems this trend is on aesthetics and not practicality. There are no rules as far as what can and can't go together, the effect here is colour and layers... lots of it! It's very reminiscent of childhood days, with a wrist full of friendship bracelets, beads and charms. It seems like there isn't a particular style to attach to this wrist action trend, you could be wearing Celine pants or denim cut offs. Part boho, part surfer, part punk, it just depends on how you mix and match all the bracelets you've collected over the years. And the great thing is it doesn't require you to splurge. The best and most unique bracelets can probably be found at the markets.
