watson x watson summer 13/ 14.

The first thing you should know about Watson x Watson is that they never steer far away from their roots. With all the success the brand has achieved in two short years, sisters Liberty and Somer remain extremely grounded, never forgetting where they've come from. Their debut fashion week collection in 2012 was inspired by the bush raves of their teen years. Back for their sophomore follow up, the Watson sisters went through a 90's surf culture revival with their grunge-gone-luxe inspired collection. Growing up on the Coffs Coast probably had a lot to do with it.

The Watson x Watson girl wasn't a surfer herself. I imagine her sitting on the sand, watching her boy catching a wave while she herself preferred to catch rays. It was somewhat reminiscent of 3.1 Phillip Lim's neo grunge collection last September, but the laid back elements of the Australian surf landscape made it uniquely theirs. A modern take on Puberty Blues perhaps? There were feminine plaids with pink accents, jacket-tied-around-the-waist draping, thigh high splits and high wetsuit neckline contrasted with metallics and sequin accents emulating the ocean glistening in the sunlight. But no signs of neoprene here. No she doesn't like to get wet. Immersing herself in the surfie subculture she at the very least dressed the part. She was damn cool. She knew it and everyone else knew it.

The second thing you should know about the duo is that they're big on prints. I remember their very first collection featured a darker, more sophisticated take on the silk pajama print trend (to this day I am still beating myself up for not purchasing that print). Last year it was a hypercolour fluro interpretation of feminine florals and this time around they took the abstract swirls, textures and ripples of the ocean and turned it into one standout print. And to top it all off a bright matte pink lip, killer thick frame Sunday Somewhere shades and lightly teased hair with a half tuck. You could almost feel the salty sea breeze.

it was all yellow.

I distinctly remember the three times I've encountered yellow in my wardrobe. The first was in primary school and as my house colour, I was required to wear it every sport day Friday. The second was when I went to a 15th birthday dress as Misty from Pokemon and the last was seeing Gwen Stefani at the beginning of her 'What You Waiting For?' music video wearing a yellow cropped shirt and black headband and wanting to copy that look for myself (funnily enough I've been listening to this song on repeat for the last few days). And this right here would mark the fourth. 

I'm rarely a colour person (and if I am it's pastel or muted so from far away it looks like a neutral) but when I was asked to pick out my favourite piece at the Somedays Lovin showing a few weeks ago, I found myself drawn to this simplistic 'vein' print. What I love about it the most is the neckline, high, just the way I like it (almost like a halter neck), showing a little more of the shoulder and shoulder blade than usual. Is there a proper term for it? Because I just bought a Zimmermann playsuit in the same style that I just can't get enough of. A message to designers: please make more tees and basics in this cut.

pink hair, don't care.

Thank god summer's around the corner because the early sunset was enough to drive me insane. It's been frustrating me for months that I haven't been able to take as many outfit posts and flat lays as I've hoped simply because by the time I make it home it's already pitch black. And if I'm ever back early, I have no photographer because he's still working. I had to seize the opportunity a week ago to steal Uppy after the end of her shift (and a crazy weekend of photography for her) to take these pictures for me at our work carpark. We just managed to catch the last inkling of good lighting for the day.

I know this outfit looks almost identical to one we took together a few months ago, but what can I say? Blush goes really well with this top. And it makes my purchase even more satisfying when I can translate something from a winter collection into a summer wear. And yes, I did do something to my hair, thank you for noticing. I was getting a little bored of my  grown out balayage so I thought I'd shake things up a bit with some colour. I used the BFF recommended Fudge Paintbox to get the temp colour (however it's now faded to this strawberry amber looking thing). I was all set to get my balayage done this week but I am really loving/ embracing the pink hair. The only downside is that shop assistants and campaigners and now have a really good conversation starter.

a/w lookbook. watson x watson.


Late last year I had the pleasure of previewing this collection and after what seems like forever, it's finally available for you (and me) to get your hot little hands on  I was in awe after seeing the lookbook - it's one thing to see these clothes on a hanger, it's another to see how the designers intended these pieces to be styled. Described as 'any-day and everyday pieces... the kind you dress up and dress down', Somer and Liberty's first A/W collection (you never would have guessed) boasts wearable knits, sequins, fur and leather - everything you could possibly need to keep you warm and snug for winter. I've got my eye on the Escher print pieces (one of the better pyjama/ print scarf takes I've seen out there) and the red and white pom pom knit. I fall more in love with this collection every time I see it, probably because I could see myself wearing each and every one of these pieces (styled in a similar way too). Keep your eye out for the design duo - I can see them making some serious waves in the industry within the next few years.

PS. Sorry for the mini hiatus - I'm still shaking off the fact I'm not in holiday mode anymore. But I'm back with plenty of ideas to make this blog better than ever :)

I don't actually blog this efficiently (though I really should - I have a backlog of posts that I should have done before this one), I couldn't wait to share with you my pictures from today. Took my new Olympus EP3 for its first run and I have to say the boy and I couldn't be happier. It's a mirror less camera, slightly larger than your standard digital camera but has the power and quality of an SLR. I bought it not only to take on holiday with me, but also for this blog! I wanted something I could fit in my handbag and not weigh me down, and still take great photos. But more on my new baby later.

I finally bought these Stylestalker shorts after having them on my wish list when the collection first launched. I've seen them on some other bloggers but I wanted to style it a little differently. I tried on a white racerback and black singlet (typical me) before remember I had this mesh top that matched the blue shiver print. It could not have worked out better! I made Jack take these shots for me on the way to El Loco - he was slightly annoyed that he couldn't get to the food straightaway, but doing this after eating an El hotdog would have not have been a nice sight. If you're in Sydney and you haven't eaten at El Loco, you are seriously missing out.

Below was the damage for today. I bought Jack shorts from Saba as part of his birthday present, (also because he's long overdue for a decent pair of shorts) and myself Kelly Cutrone's new book and Aesop moisturiser. It took a lot of willpower not to buy everything I saw today, but I have to remember to brace myself for my holiday where I expect lots of big purchases to occur. Two weeks from today I'll be on a plane jet setting to Malaysia!

PAPR showing.

A couple of weeks ago (or possibly longer) I braved the early morning chill and headed to a homey little cafe in Double Bay called Mrs Sippy (the name just says it all) for the Park Avenue PR A/W 12 showings. This was a huge deal for me because it was the first blogger event I was invited to so you can imagine what a little eager beaver I was. We were greeted by pastries, orange juice in champagne flutes and racks full of prints, fur, knits. Pratten, Zimma Tailors and Tara Lawson were just some of the lovely labels on show. But the one that caught my eye were Sydney based brand, Watson x Watson, the brainchild of sisters Liberty and Somer Watson. Although known for their wearable luxe basics and beautiful draping, the girls have branched out to include some Rachel Zoe style fur (ethically farmed) vests and knits just in time for winter. But the thing that first caught my eye were the amazing navy and red pyjama prints which came in shorts, pants, shirt and a bomber jacket. I wanted to take them home straight away (sadly we'll have to wait until February).  The talented Watson sisters created their first collection in shoes this year and have transitioned to next season with some practical but stylish leather boots and heels. I tried on my favourite pair (pictured above) which were surprisingly lightweight and easy to walk in - and gave me the extra cm boost I need.
