Photos by April

Before I begin I would just like to point out that I did not turn into a Photoshop extraordinaire overnight. The product that you see before you is a combination of April's excellent styling and photography and Julia Trotti's downloadable Photoshop actions (saviour!). I thought I had mastered the art of photo editing in Aperture, but after seeing exactly how many steps goes into this PSD action just to get this sunkissed look (mind you I haven't touched Photoshop since the HSC), I realised how much I have yet to learn. Mastering PS is going right at the top of my summer to do list.

And now to the photos. I received these high waisted shorts from State of Georgia and I thought they would be perfect to recreate a pin up girl inspired look with wedges. But April insisted I wear her floral headpiece and retro sunnies and the rest was del history. And so it became my LDR inspired outfit, an ode to my favourite songstress, the one who never ceases to fascinate me. I realise this isn't exactly what 'Melissa' would wear on a daily basis, but I find myself channeling differing vibes depending on my mood, where I'm going and who I'm seeing. One day it might be very refined/ chic (a-la Equipment shirt, skinny jeans and loafers) and the next day very street/ borderline skate /generic (ie. tee, cut-offs and Cons). I've been pondering my personal style of late and wondering to myself just exactly what it is and how I can pinpoint it. I honestly don't think I've found it quite yet (perhaps I'm looking things more critically and you see something completely different all together). And I think it will be some time before I can figure it out for myself. I want this blog will be an exploration of the evolution of my style (even if it means experimenting with looks that aren't usually me) and I hope you don't mind coming along for the ride.

new in.

Equipment shirt, Antipodium shirt (in black here), J Brand boyfriend jeans (from The Iconic), Apple iPhone 5, Aesop Geranium Leaf body scrub and A Rose By Any Other Name body cleanser.

There's just something so satisfying about acquiring new things, regardless of the fact that you're parting with your hard earned money. Whether it's something as ordinary as a body scrub or as timeless as a silk button up shirt, the feeling never gets old. Putting something on for the first time, wearing it in, making it your own. It's a feeling that only happens once for every item, but boy when it does it's such a special moment, even though no one else can recognise it except you. You feel like you can take on the world.

These are all the bits and pieces I've acquired over the last week (and most recently a Kahlo tank which came after I took this flat lay yesterday). The two shirts (obsessed with building up my shirt collection at the moment) were from birthday gift vouchers (thanks Tim and Sarah), the boyfriend jeans I managed to sneak in with Jack's leather dress shoes he purchased from The Iconic, the Aesop I justify by saying I need it for my dry skin and my iPhone 5... I just had  to have it (well considering where I work, I think it would be wrong of me not to).

Taken by Aprilia Love

After meeting up with the wonderful Aprilia Love for laksa lunch yesterday, we headed to Hyde Park to take some photos. It took us a good 20 minutes of deliberating where to take the photos (or whether to take them at all) because there were just too many people around.  But Hyde Park did not let us down and we found the perfect backdrop under the avenue of arching trees. I love the spots of sunlight coming through the canopy and onto the ground - could not have turned out better. And it made my new hair look insanely fiery and red (I didn't even realise the colour was that intense). Yes I jumped on the ombre bandwagon last week and lightened my hair, and with my trusty Cloud Nine, have started to curl the ends. A huge change from jet black dead straight hair.

I bought the Antipodium skirt from Capital L after deciding I needed more bottoms in my wardrobe. It is unlike anything else I own (which is why I bought it) - the hardest part was getting over the fact it's not high waisted and resisting the urge to pull it up. I paired it with my birthday cuff from the team at SW and my new Jeffrey Campbell wedges.

Aprilia was behind the lens on this one and I am so happy with the shots! I had a go at taking her outfit snaps so head over to her blog to see my attempted work of art.
