winter blues.

There are three essentials I always make sure I'm armed with when the temperature starts to drop and the sun sets before I'm home. Surviving winter in a city where 'winter' isn't really winter (when you compare it to most other countries) is simple with a good selection of chunky knits, jeans and ankle boots. Comfy, practical and toasty.  I find myself itching to buy knits and jeans way before the winter season is well and truly underway. I'm talking cashmere sweater and jean hunting during February and March. I suppose you can never been too prepared. I've pulled together my winter in the city survival kit for the latest Wish and Honda Australia style challenge, tying in my favourite shade for the colder months (sans black, white and grey).

down and out.

It's hard to believe that once upon a time, people considered navy and black to be a no-go colour combo because after black and white (followed closely by black and marle grey), I couldn't see a more fitting duo. I went navy with this boxy cropped top by up and coming Australian label, Arnley. Launched in 2011 when Kelly Sharples decided to make the switch from architecture to fashion, Arnley boasts polished, classic silhouettes with a modern edge focusing on relaxed tailoring and pure design elements. The swing crop epitomes the architectural yet feminine aesthetic through its wide sleeves which I surprisingly took a liking towards. And then there are my insanely versatile Asos shorts, one of the best purchases I made last year. I never had much luck with Asos, that is until I came across these bad boys. They've reproduced this winning style in a bunch of different colours, prints and textures and lucky for you most of them are on sale. I highly recommend getting yourself a pair - you can't be wearing denim cut offs all the time now can you?

blue jeans.

Blue has always been one of my favourite colours even since I was a little girl. I was a tomboy at heart and my mother had painted my room a pale pink. It took some persistence but I managed to get it painted a nice sky blue (similar shade to Andy's room sans the clouds which now that I think about it would have been a great idea) and I forced my mum to only buy me bed sheets that are blue. To this day she's still kept her word.

I still gravitate towards blues, navy and everything in between. Blue is basically the colour of my wardrobe (excluding black of course). Even the colour way of my pretty little Pashli is actually called denim. Speaking of denim, I've said it before but these Skin 5's are the perfect fit jeans. Resisting the urge to buy them in every other colour despite the fact it's (for the majority) far too warm to wear skin tight clothes. There's also nothing quite like a classic, clean, blue button up. Always appropriate, always fresh. Jack's intense growing interest in menswear has had a subconscious effect on my choices also. Crisp shirts, polished loafers. He's definitely giving me a run for my money in the fashion department. When he gets his tailored suits back, I'll prove it.

it's not over.

It's official. After seventeen years, my formal education comes to an end... that is until I decide to return and do a postgrad degree. But none of that right now. Officially at the end of one chapter of your life and figuring out how to write another is a scary feeling. I've pictured the moment I finish university ever since I was in primary school and it was a little bit of a letdown. I've become accustomed to this uni/ work balance that I know nothing else. What exactly is relaxing? What do I do with all my spare time? *twiddles thumbs* All those readings, study notes, assignments, late nights, early mornings are no more. I can come home after work, jump into bed and not feel guilty about catching up on the Bachelor or the NBA. It's a glorious feeling. Until you realise you can't just continue your post-uni lifestyle without taking on responsibility.

The next step is trying to put that degree to good use. The job market isn't the greatest and that means grad positions are super competitive. For me, I'm still trying to figure out whether to go down PR or marketing, whether to stay in fashion or branch out. While I'm figuring all that out, I decided to treat yo self to a congratulationsonfinishingyourdegree present, a-la this Pashli mini (thank you generously for the donation ATO). I've had a close eye on the Pashli ever since it became the it-bag and I'm in need of an everyday cross body so I figure it was time I invested in one. I thought this denim colourway would be a good contrast to my darker wardrobe hues of navy and blue. Full outfit tomorrow!

as you are.

I've been obsessed with the Sono Mama tee ever since I saw Nina Garcia unexpectedly repping it on Project Runway (yes it is still airing and very much my guilty pleasure) a few episodes back. It brought a sense of youthfulness and understated chic I never knew she had in her. Though classified a tee, there's nothing plain about it - the jewelled neckline, mesh sleeves, low v neck, a completely mesh back and of course the crowning crest which looks part biker gang, part fraternity. Sono Mama is actually Japanese for as you are. I thought imaginary gang name at first but this is much more meaningful and in an obscure way. I put together a little polished grunge look with the leather, distressed denim and mesh contrasting with silver hardware, pointed flats and that Sarah & Sebastian headpiece. Get it all on my body now.

day 4. noo-ay-vah.

3.1 Phillip Lim singlet, Aje sequin skirt, Isabel Marant sneakers, Sabre sunglasses.

I'm probably about the tenth blogger to have posted the I Heart Nueva York singlet in the last month, and here I was thinking that I was tres cool pre-ordering it from Moda Operandi last year after graced the runway in September. Old news Mel. And no, I haven't been to New York before though I've been dying to go since I was five and told myself I'd become a famous actress slash singer. I'm one of those  suckers who have this idealised view of New York (and it being the perfect city for me to live in) purely from having being exposed to it in movies and TV shows. Though I hear it is as good as it sounds/ looks and I have no doubt I will truly heart it whenever I make it there.

After having slaved away in heels for the the first three days of MBFWA (and for what? A bit of peacock-ing that had me going nowhere fast, literally) I decided it was time to stop dressing to please the fashion pack and wear something I wouldn't hobble around in. I returned to my trusty Marants and added a pinch of sparkle with my Aje sequin skirt (which I wore to fashion week last year on day four no less). Feeling a little dressed down for the occasion I went for the top recession-proof product, lipstick (I learnt this week in marketing that lipstick and alcohol are the two products people run to in times of economic crisis) in a vampy dark red. I think I've mentioned before how self conscious I get when I wear lipstick, particularly because my lips are so thick and full but I have since learned to embrace it. The only downside is the lipstick-on-the-teeth problem tends to be a common one for me so please don't be afraid to tell me if you see me.

One of my standouts at NYFW this season was 3.1 Phillip Lim. I'm drawn to more wearable collections (they don't call it ready to wear for nothing), pieces I could envisage myself walking down the street in, ones that could easily be at home in my shoebox of a wardrobe - Theysken's Theory, Dries van Noten, J Crew, Thakoon Addition and Rag & Bone were among my other favourites. So at 11pm on a week night when the BFF and I were running empty on sleep, energy and motivation, we decided that it might be a bright idea to peruse Moda Operandi and treat ourselves to a little somethin' somethin'. Turns out these I Heart Nueva York muscle singlets set us back a little over $100 and after a little 'should we, shouldn't we' (and partly inspired by Aprilia's yolo Marant sneakers purchase), we decide to just go for it. Too bad I have to wait until next year to wear it. Hey Phillip Lim, how about making my singlet now?

kapow.

I often describe my style as model off duty. Sans the model.  Though I feel as if a leggy blonde could get away with this outfit more easily than myself. The rest of us ordinary people have to work harder to be able to pull off the same thing. Something like this just seems too simple that I feel the need to rely on other elements like makeup, hair, heels and accessories to make up for the lack of skinny pins (not that I have done that here though, hypocrite).

I took these photos with Christine (who I met during MBFWA backstage at Watson x Watson) in between some time out at our shoot on Saturday. If you've been following me on Facebook or Instagram, you'll know I had the opportunity to style my very first photoshoot for the UNSW Photo Club. Let's just say I have a huge respect for full time stylists. It's a tough job. Sourcing pieces, formulating the creative direction, pulling enough options in case something doesn't go quite right on the day, taping shoes - I'm about to embark on the task of returns... all without a car (hooray for public transport). It took a lot more work than I had initially anticipated, but definitely worth it. I'll be sure to post the fruits of my labor in the coming weeks.

Wasn't sure where to begin with NYFW coverage but I think 3.1 Phillip Lim is a good start. I could not resist blogging about this collection the moment I saw it. I love the mix of sorbets and pastels, the silks and the draping of the garments. The collection is inspired by Lim's childhood and his memory of kites which I think is so evident when you see the movement of these pieces down the runway. I love the mix between the feminine tailoring of the jackets and the masculine slouch of the pants and singlets. It's like a breath of fresh air (which is what any spring collection should evoke), makes me feel light and relaxed and ready to take on spring.

I finally found my way to engage with all these runway shows. Sure I can read reviews and browse through slideshows, but a video with the collection walking down the runway and an interview with the designer about their inspiration bring all the elements together nicely. I spent all morning in bed watching style's coverage of NYFW. Do it. Seriously addictive.

I've been stuck at home for the last three days (sick again I know) with food poisoning. So the lesson learnt is don't ever trust me to prepare you a frozen meal, let alone a cooked one because you'll have many days of suffering. Who would have thought such a small block of lasagne could cause so much trouble? On the upside, I've gained plenty of rest, got all my uni work done, probably lost a bit of weight and didn't have to spend money on food.

New IT bag alert. 3.1 Philip Lim Pashli Satchel.
Giving the Celine shopper, a run for its money (and certainly more affordable). I think I love it so much because it looks like the Celine, but it doesn't have the horizontal zipper than makes it look like a robot face (silly boyfriend ruining fashion). But seriously, how good does the functional and yet so stylish gold zipper detail look? Practical also if you ever need to expand the width of the bag. And I love how the chain hangs off the bottom. It's roomy, chic, simple and practical. The colours are perfect for autumn (I hate living in the southern hemisphere) and the shark textured leather is standout.
